Nairobi
Life and colour in the safari capital.
Deep into the rainy season in Nairobi, we connected with leading Kenyan artist Bhupendra Jethwa aka Wise Two, a prominent muralist whose work graces many buildings across Nairobi. Alongside him, we filmed many of the beautiful pieces he's created across the city.
Wise Two introduced us to Saviour Juma, a native of Africa's largest slum, Kibera. Saviour and his friends introduced us to their studio and communtiy and showed us the work they're doing within Kibera, including upcycling waste from discarded rubbish heaps and transforming it into beautiful artworks.
While in Kibera, we went to the KTC, a charitable initiative set up to give locals access to creative workspaces, including a recording studio. It was in the recording studio we encountered by chance, the passionate local music artist, Futwax. Futwax played us his latest release, Where I come from, his musical commentary to life in Kibera. We loved Futwax's passion and energy and wanted to share that with the world, so Futwax wrote and performed the lyrics for our Nairobi video, with his lyrics being his letter to Nairobi and we also feature the beat from 'Where I come from'.
While in an art studio in Kibera, we met Kamanya Christian from Uganda, Christian is advocating and pioneering new homegrown opportunities for young people in Africa by harnessing the growing international success of Afrobeats music. Exploring entrepreneurial ways to to create new business avenues in media and event content production and management for East Africans.
Christian introduced us to the talented upcoming Ugandan music producer, Osiru Joel aka Klin. Klin went on to beautifully produce the music for both our Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro videos.
